Artists’ Definition

What Does the World Define as an Artist

I don’t know what the rest of the world defines as an artist. I only know what I define as an artist.
As an artist, my definition of myself is someone who passionately wants to share what I see. To communicate, sometimes verbally, but most often in the form of painting, drawing, molding, sculpting, as that is the way I can most effectively say what I wish to.
Teaching is also a form of . I teach piano and music theory and , and suffer tremendously during the summer months, when my students are on holiday. I live to teach, and feel regenerated and revived after lessons.
So, what is art? Art is worship of a sort, an acknowledgement of the world we live in, in whatever medium we are comfortable with. It is recognition of the beauty around us, the smallness of our individualities, and the hope that our work will help others, to see, smell, hear, feel and share all that we have. And pass it on.
Art is NOT about politics, trends, fashion, style. I guess these are my four worst bugaboos.
I think it is more rewarding to stick to the truths of ones’ callings, and not make a fortune, than to sell out and deliver what is ‘in’ for the sake of a pay cheque.
I don’t approach the making of art with a dollar sign in front of my eyes. When I am creating a work, my motive is purely the joy of doing. If I do sell a painting, of course I’m delighted. After all, I have creature needs too, and need to replenish paints and brushes every so often. ;-) Feedback welcome.

The Lone Ranger

18 July, 2009 (20:55) | Humour, Life, Miscellaneous | No comments

:-D ‘Kimosabe, look towards sky; what you see?’ The Lone Ranger replies, ‘I see millions of stars.’ ‘What that tell you?’ asked Tonto?” The Lone Ranger ponders for a minute then says, ‘Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies. Time wise, it appears to approximately a quarter past three in the morning. Theologically, the Lord is all powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. What does it tell you, Tonto?’

‘You dumber than buffalo. Someone stole tent.’

AMAZING

I am so grateful for the gift of vision after being nearly blind for so long. Every day, I’m surprised with what I can see, like flutterbyes and birds and buds and insects and and and…I am so grateful. Having new eyes has opened my eyes, in every way.

I can’t believe I painted without this vision, but I did. Many of the great Masters painted without clear vision, and look what they gave us!
Every morning I awake and can’t believe I don’t have to reach for my glasses to see. Period.

Blessed Be. 8-)

Farewell

25 June, 2009 (20:46) | Family & Friends, Life, Miscellaneous, Paths | No comments

I just found out that a high school chum of mine has passed away. She was a very gentle soul, then, and apparently lived that way until she died. I am sad, Pat. I really liked you. Loved watching hockey games with you. Rest in peace, with all the love you deserved. My condolences to the family.

Well, here I am with, finally, two fixed eyes and a somewhat new bosom! Since May 20th I have had five surgeries and their ensuing recooperations. I’m happy to report that I’m finally feeling like a mensch (human in English) and very excited to be back among the living:) Thank you to one and all for your support and well wishes, and especially to my sweet husband, Doug, for his support and care. Couldn’t have done it without you, my love. Now, to get on with life! :-D

It’s Been a While….

29 May, 2009 (23:35) | Life, Paths, Social Comments | 2 comments

Hi to all. I haven’t been in the frame of mind to write lately, as much has been happening in this world of mine.

Breast Cancer has certainly changed my view of life, and thankfully, I’m one of the lucky ones that was caught and treated early. I’m now an ardent supporter of breast cancer fund raising endeavors, and you’ll find me marching proudly down the streets of the small town I live in, Trail, BC, wearing pink EVERYTHING to announce my support.

I recently had a breast reconstruction, after nearly a year and a half of pondering, and a breast reduction on my ‘good’ side to help balance me and perhaps help my spinal problems.

I went into this with a hugely positive attitude, and I’m on the other side of recovery now.

This process has shifted my thinking and understanding of illness in many ways. I’m not sure if I’ll be able to express this adequately, but I’ll try.

Gratefulness; I’m truly grateful that this was caught early. Be assiduous in getting your mammograms done, yearly. Even you guys, if it is found in your family.

Acknowledgment; We really are here for a short amount of time, and yes, it can happen to you.

Grace; Love of life, and a true desire to extend that love to all you touch.

Compassion; for the ones I’ve lost, and to their loved ones left to mourn. Sometimes, there just aren’t any words to express the sadness.

Hope; that the Universe will cradle us all in our journeys.

I’m glad to be here.

:-D Hello All – I have been working hard on painting and teaching these days.

I found out recently that a painting I had submitted for the Federation of Canadian Artists exhibition in June in Nelson, was accepted, and I won the Gold Award! I am tickled every colour of the rainbow, and am even more motivated to create.

I will be updating my website with new paintings in the near future….stay tuned.

“Hell” Explained!

16 February, 2009 (20:27) | Humour, Life, Paths, Religion, Social Comments, Tongue in Cheek Humour | 2 comments

The following is an actual question given on a University of Washington chemistry mid term.

The answer by one student was so profound that the professor shared it
with colleagues, via the Internet, which is, of course, why we now have the pleasure of enjoying it as well :

Bonus Question*: *Is Hell exothermic (gives off heat) or endothermic (absorbs heat)?

Most of the students wrote proofs of their beliefs using Boyle’s Law (gas cools when it expands and heats when it is compressed) or some variant.

One student, however, wrote the following:

First, we need to know how the mass of Hell is changing in time. So we need to know the rate at which souls are moving into Hell and the rate at which they are leaving. I think that we can safely assume that once a soul gets to Hell, it will not leave. Therefore, no souls are leaving. As for how many souls are entering Hell, let’s look at the different religions that exist in the world today.

Most of these religions state that if you are not a member of their religion, you will go to Hell. Since there is more than one of these religions and since people do not belong to more than one religion, we
can project that all souls go to Hell. With birth and death rates as they are, we can expect the number of souls in Hell to increase exponentially. Now, we look at the rate of change of the volume in Hell because Boyle’s Law states that in order for the temperature and pressure in Hell to stay the same, the volume of Hell has to expand proportionately as souls are added.

This gives two possibilities:

1. If Hell is expanding at a slower rate than the rate at which souls enter Hell, then the temperature and pressure in Hell will increase until “all Hell breaks loose”.

2. If Hell is expanding at a rate faster than the increase of souls in Hell, then the temperature and pressure will drop until “Hell freezes over”.

So which is it?

If we accept the postulate given to me by Teresa during my Freshman year that, ‘It will be a cold day in Hell before I sleep with you,’ and take into account the fact that I slept with her last night, then number two must be true, and thus I am sure that Hell is exothermic and has already frozen over. The corollary of this theory is that since Hell has frozen over, it follows that it is not accepting any more souls and is therefore, extinct…… leaving only Heaven, thereby proving the existence of a divine being which explains why, last night, Teresa kept shouting ‘Oh my God.’

THIS STUDENT RECEIVED AN A+

From DebbieAnne-Thanks!
